What entry requirements do I need?
You will need a minimum of: 5 GCSEs grade A*- C (grade 4 - 9) including English and maths, or Level 2 Public Services.
What will I learn?
This course will help you to gain a better understanding of the skills and behaviours required to start a career in the Uniform Services or Armed forces, or progress onto a higher level of study.
During this advanced course will build on your knowledge from previous study to further understand the roles that our uniformed and emergency services play in supporting, helping and protecting us. You will develop the behavioural and working skills required to be part of the public services, and understand citizenship and diversity. You will have the opportunity to improve your physical fitness, as well as improve your land navigation during a trip to Snowdon.
You will study modules and units including:
- Health, fitness and lifestyle for the public services
- Team leadership
- Citizenship and diversity
- Command and control
- Outdoor and adventurous activities
- Planning for and management of major incidents
- Multi-day expedition experience
You will begin the year with an induction camp where you will meet all sports and Uniformed Public Service students within the department and start developing the skills required to be successful.
As well as learning in the classroom, you will use The Station Plaza Fitness gym and nearby Horntye Park Sports complex, enabling you to put learning into practice and develop your practical abilities.
You will also get the opportunity to enhance your skills and experience through a range of voluntary events, organising Black Tie Charity auctions to raise funds for various charities and activities.
You will study a total of 18 units in the two years which will be internally assessed through a variety of assessment methods including written reports and essays, presentations, and practical observations. You will keep all of your assessments in a portfolio and will be able to track your own grade throughout the course.
What could I progress on to?
Once you have completed the course you may choose to continue studying at university.
You may look to start your career in the public services industry and apply for roles in the Police force, Armed forces, prison service or as a firefighter.
