What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 4 GCSEs grade A*- D (grade 3 - 9) including English and maths.

What will I learn?

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include: Health safety and hygiene, Make-up applications, Hair preparation services, Continuity planning for make-up services, Dress and finish hair services, Continuity hair services, Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists, Total look for competition work, Face and body art painting, Fashion and editorial make-up. Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan for and provide make-up applications, hair preparation services, fashion and editorial make-up and face and body painting. Learners will develop their abilities to ensure continuity services are adhered to for make-up application and hair services, whilst developing abilities to produce a total look for competition work. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed.

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up Artistry is a technical certificate qualification aimed at learners aged 16-19 who are in a full-time Level 2 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hair and make-up artist. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but in order to optimise their chances of success, a learner will ideally hold a Level 1 qualification or equivalent in beauty therapy.

Learners studying this qualification will be assessed throughout the academic year. They will have two exams and a graded synoptic assessment which will be held at the college but set up by an external examining body.

What could I progress on to?

Learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:

  • Theatrical and media make-up

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a hair and make-up artist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios
  • Beauty and/or hair salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home based settings
  • National Health Service
  • Product manufacturing and training

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
