Painting & Decorating Level 2

What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 2 GCSEs grade D/3 in English and maths, and successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.

What will I learn?

During this one-year course you will develop your existing knowledge and learn more advanced techniques and principles of painting and decorating. You will learn some more advance painting techniques such as how to paint in complex areas with brushes and rollers. You’ll learn how to erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms, and practise producing specialist finishes for decorative effect. You will have the opportunity to undertake a work experience placement and improve your English and maths skills during the course.

During this course you will cover topics including:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principals of building construction
  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex areas
  • Applying standard papers to walls and ceilings
  • Producing specialist finishes for decorative work
  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms

During this course you will be able to expand your knowledge and technical ability to help prepare you for a career in the industry.

Assessments will take place throughout the duration of the course. Practical tasks will make up 60% of the assessment, coursework will make up 30% and 10% will be made up of exams. Accuracy and completing tasks within a specified time frame will be important to the successful completion of the course. Constructive feedback from your tutor will also help you to improve and progress towards recognised industrial standards.

What could I progress on to?

On completion of the course you can progress onto a Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship or our Level 3 Painting and Decorating.

You may wish to start your career in the industry and could find roles as an Industrial Painter, Specialist Paperhanger or go into Property Maintenance.

A range of specified PPE and a basic painting kit and equipment will be required for this course and will cost approximately £40.

The PPE required will consist of safety boots, white bib and brace overalls and navy/black polo shirt. There are also a number of opportunities throughout the year for various construction related trips which may also incur a cost.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
