What entry requirements do I need?
You will need a minimum of: 5 GCSEs grade A*/9 - D/3 including maths, and at least a grade C/4 in English Language is required. DBS check will be required.
What will I learn?
During this one-year course you will learn a range of skills that will prepare you to work in a supervised capacity with children and their families in a variety of settings. Combines theory and practical elements of the course you will gain an understanding of the role that a childcare practitioner plays in the workplace, how to ensure that children are kept safe, and understand how children learn and develop, taking into consideration cognitive, emotional, and environmental influences. The vocational aspects of this course will prepare you well for a career in this sector.
During the course you will explore units including:
- Support of child and young person development
- Children and young people's health and safety
- Support of positive environments for children and young people
- Partnership working in services for children and young people
- Communication in health, social care or children and young people's settings
- Personal development in health, social care or children and young people's settings
The college will help you to find the most suitable work placement option for you with our extensive links with local childcare settings. The fact that you will be doing much of your learning in a childcare setting will give you the best possible start on a career path in childcare and education sector.
Working with children and young people can be one of the most rewarding ways to make a living and getting the BTEC First Certificate for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce will open the door to many roles in this area.
You will be internally assessed by a range of methods, including direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments and practical tasks.
What could I progress on to?
On completion of the course you can progress directly to the Level 3 Children's Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) qualification.
You may also look to start your career in the industry as a Nursery assistant or a Childminder's assistant.
Students on this course will be charged for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to enable the college and the placement childcare settings to check any criminal convictions that may affect your ability to work in this sector. (This replaces the old Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.)
The current cost is £55. During the course there will also be an additional cost for educational visits.
