Diploma Forensic Science

What will I learn?

During this two-year course you will develop the lab skills and knowledge to help you to progress into a career in laboratory science.

Over the duration of the course you learn the fundamentals of the application of science to the law. You will master the practical techniques you need to help collect forensic evidence, by searching for and examining physical traces that could be used to establish a link to someone suspected of committing a crime. You will understand forensic psychology and also gain an understanding of the criminal investigation process.

You will also develop an appreciation of the competencies, skills and knowledge required for Higher Education and employment in science-based careers.

During the course you will be able to study six mandatory and six optional modules including:

  • Fundamentals of science
  • Science practical techniques
  • Forensic evidence collection and analysis
  • Criminal investigation procedures
  • Forensic fire investigation
  • Forensic psychology

Your assessments will be coursework-based, and will include specific unit assignments, presentations, tests, observation of practical work and practical lab written reports.

What could I progress on to?

Once you have completed the course you will have the opportunity to study a wide range of university courses, both within and outside the science curriculum.

You may also look to start your career in the industry and work towards becoming a Forensic scientist, or Crime scene investigator.

There may be some additional costs during the course for trips and visits to further your learning.
